Australia are likely to play Pakistan in the quarter-finals of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup after they finished second in their group, courtesy of Sri Lanka's win over tournament hosts West Indies.

Australia's defeat to Sri Lanka earlier in the week meant they needed results to go their way in the final round of Group D matches to advance.

After they took care of business with a seven-wicket victory over Scotland, they anxiously awaited the outcome of the group's final game a day later.

West Indies posted 9-250 in Basseterre before Sri Lanka paced their run chase perfectly -- 7-251 -- to reach their target with 10 balls to spare.

The result sealed top spot for Sri Lanka, who won all three of their group matches, wile Australia's two victories proved enough to pip West Indies for second place.

In the last eight, Australia will face the winners of Group C -- almost certain to be Pakistan who top their section and face the winless Papua New Guinea in their remaining round-robin match on Sunday (AEDT).
