After last summer’s Ashes Test match was cancelled due to border issues, WA cricket fans will be rewarded with a belated battle between the old rivals in a new format this season.

Australia and England will meet in a Twenty20 international at Optus Stadium on Sunday October 9, as the opening leg of a three-match series that leads into the T20 World Cup.

The match has been switched to Perth as a replacement for the one-day international between Australia and South Africa that was due to be held at Optus Stadium on January 17.

The three-match ODI series against the Proteas has been cancelled after Cricket South Africa’s decision to withdraw to prioritise their new domestic Twenty20 league.

The change means there will be no international cricket played in Perth during the Christmas school holidays this summer, though a full book of seven Perth Scorchers Big Bash League games will be on offer at Optus Stadium in December and January.

Optus Stadium will host three of the semifinalists from last year’s tournament in champions Australia, England and Pakistan, as well as India and the Proteas.

England thrashed Australia by eight wickets with 50 balls to spare when they met in Dubai during last year’s T20 World Cup. They didn’t meet in the finals, with England eliminated by New Zealand in a semifinal before the Aussies defeated the Kiwis to claim their first T20 title.

Local all-rounder Cam Green is in line to make his first Test appearance in his home State when Perth hosts its first Test match in nearly three years, against the West Indies from November 30.

WA last hosted a Test match in December 2019, when Australia thrashed New Zealand in a day-night Test at Perth Stadium.
