East Perth sharpshooter Jye Amiss ticks every box in rise from Busselton to AFL ranks for Fremantle Dockers

Jye Amiss has hit every marker on his journey to becoming a professional footballer with Fremantle. But it’s the stinging precision that has taken many by surprise. Two years ago, Amiss barely scraped into the WA state program as an underage talent. Last year, he booted 51.15 in a dominant season of colts football at East Perth and forced Fremantle’s hand at pick eight. It’s a rise few predicted and one that is in the early stages of a stunning gradient as the 18-year-old prepares to debut for the Dockers on Friday night. “It certainly wasn’t expected at the start of last year,” WA talent manager Adam Jones said. “I remember sitting with Fremantle recruiters during an early East Perth colts game and I remember asking their opinion of him at the time. “It was when he’d just burst onto the scene. Everyone was still getting a handle on him. “We certainly didn’t have him ranked as high as what he went this time last year. It’s been a meteoric rise for him.” A debut was in some respects necessary given Fremantle will be without key forwards Matt Taberner (hamstring), Rory Lobb (COVID protocols) and ruckman Lloyd Meek (COVID protocols) against North Melbourne. But it was nevertheless earnt after a long journey to the AFL draft. Amiss has spent the past two years doubling as an aspiring footballer and coach, making the journey from Busselton to Perth for training and games weekly in 2021. It made what he produced on a week-to-week basis even more remarkable and raised hopes for what Amiss could achieve in a full-time football environment. “It goes to show, what he did off such limited preparation,” Royals colts coach Daniel Curtis said. “You could see his development week on week. His influence on our program and the competition became too much to ignore.” In another universe, Amiss would be competing for a spot on the wing alongside the likes of Blake Acres and Nathan O’Driscoll. But Amiss’s prowess up forward was quickly discovered and never forgotten. “Initially we thought he would be an athletic wingman,” Curtis said. “But as we kept shifting him around it was evident he was going to play inside 50 and be a key forward for us.” Now it’s up to Amiss to rise again and do so on one of the biggest stages in football on Friday night at Optus Stadium. He’ll also have to shoulder the expectations of an entire fanbase. Not only was he drafted with the pick that completed the Adam Cerra trade, but he is also the first key forward Fremantle have drafted in the top 10 since Matthew Pavlich. Fremantle have made six changes to face the Kangaroos amidst a COVID outbreak, with Griffin Logue, Blake Acres, Travis Colyer, Rory Lobb, Lloyd Meek and Michael Frederick out. Amiss joins Liam Henry, Heath Chapman, Hayden Young and Sean Darcy as inclusions.
