Retiring Fremantle great David Mundy has backed emerging midfielder Caleb Serong to take over the club’s captaincy when Nat Fyfe eventually steps down.

Brownlow medal contender Andrew Brayshaw has been widely tipped to be the leading contender for the role after his emergence as one of the league’s premier midfielders in the past two seasons.

Mundy acknowledged the 22-year-old was built for the role but the former captain said Serong, 21, was his top pick to be the club’s next skipper after displaying his burning desire to own Fremantle’s trajectory towards success.

Mundy said “you could raffle it between a couple of guys”.

He considered Alex Pearce to be in the mix. “Alex has been in the leadership group for a number of years. Andy Brayshaw is the one everyone talks about coming through. He’s a natural-born leader who has those qualities ingrained in his personality. He controls the young guys and instils those professional standards.

“He’s probably a little bit young. But he’s so driven to take the club forward over the next 10 years and achieve some success. He’s cut from a different cloth.”

Mundy, 37, will play his final western derby on Saturday.

The fixture also marks his final home-and-away game in Perth before the Dockers embark on their first finals campaign since 2015.

Speaking at the North Fremantle Football Club derby long lunch, supporting the Purple Hands Foundation, Mundy said the reality of his final few weeks at the Dockers had started to set in.

“It’s a bit weird, to be honest. There’s no finality to it,” he said.

“I know I’m retiring I’m just not sure when. We’ll see how far we can get.

“I wanted to go out with something left. I didn’t want to hang around and be a hindrance and get in the way of other guys going through and finish up playing in the WAFL.

“We’ve been on a journey finding ourselves again over the past few weeks. We had a good start to the year and had our troubles across the past two months.

“We feel like we know what we need to focus on to get the best out of ourselves each week. But we feel like we’re on the right path and we’ve given ourselves the best chance to get a few more wins.”

Mundy was on light duties at Friday’s captains run alongside returning forward Sam Switkowski and defender Alex Pearce.

While Griffin Logue is set to remain up forward and support sole spearhead Matt Taberner after practising his set shots at training.
