Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers forward Jye Amiss named Round 11 Rising Star nominee after three-goal performance

Walyalup (Fremantle) sharpshooter Jye Amiss says his long-awaited Rising Star nomination was a nice reward for hard work and a sign of how well his team is tracking. The emerging Dockers spearhead found out the good news from coach Justin Longmuir that he was the round 11 Rising Star nominee for his three-goal performance in Saturday’s thrilling win over Narrm (Melbourne) at the MCG. Amiss booted two of his three majors in a tense final term, while also setting up another to Lachie Schultz in the goal square. It was back-to-back three-goal hauls for the Busselton product as Freo made it four wins on the trot. “It’s a good recognition of the hard work I’ve been putting in and is a beneficiary of how the team has been going,” Amiss told The West Australian. “It’s helping me out the more we improve so I just want to keep going upwards from here.” The 19-year-old’s remarkable set-shot accuracy has been on display in recent week, nailing 10 goals from his last 11 attempts, reflected his stunning colts year for East Perth when he booted 65.22 on the way to getting snapped up with pick eight. “I think it’s just finding a really good set-shot routine,” Amiss said. “I’ve tweaked it a little bit over the years but it’s pretty much stayed the same and I’ve just worked on it and improved through it and consistently trained it which has been in the key. “In-game it’s all about trusting it and knowing that when I do trust it, that can work out and when it doesn’t work out I know what’s going wrong with it.” Amiss has kicked a team-high 19 goals for the season which is all the more remarkable given he was left out of the opening-round team against St Kilda at Marvel Stadium before getting a recall the following week. Schultz is the next best with 17, with veteran Michael Walters on 16. “It was probably just more around structural stuff at the start of the year,” Amiss explained. “I wasn’t too fazed by it, I knew that if I went back to WAFL level and played some consistent footy and good games that I’d be able to work my way back into the side eventually. “I’m just trying to take things week by week and learning what I can from those around me. “(Forwards coach) Jaymie Graham has been really good with his coaching and helping me out during the week. “I just want to keep building that consistency and taking it week by week and just keep learning and improving.” Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said post-match that he wasn’t surprised with Amiss’ rapid rise given his exceptional work ethic. “I see his work ethic and I see how he goes about his week it doesn’t really surprise me,” Longmuir said. “The weekend is an outcome of the work you put into your preparation and I see him like all our others working their backsides off to get better and improve and the weekend is what you get.” As for Longmuir’s message when giving Amiss the good news? “He said it was a recognition of the hard work I’ve been putting in and told me to have a good break, look after myself and get ready for a big second half of the season,” Amiss said.
