Hawthorn premiership hero Cyril Rioli to pull on boots for local Victorian club Tongala

Former Hawthorn superstar Cyril Rioli is making a shock return to Victoria to play with local club Tongala.

The surprise signing means the Hawks premiership hero will feature in his first local footy game in the state since retiring in 2018.

Tongala — in the Murray Football League — signed Rioli for their clash with Cobram on June 27.

“TFNC are thrilled to announce CYRIL RIOLI will be pulling on the blue jumper for a landmark game at Tongala on Saturday, 27 JUNE,” the club announced on social media.

It is is only the second time Rioli has come back to Victoria since he stunned the football world and quit Hawthorn after a glittering career at the club.

Since then the 36-year-old (he’s about to turn 37) has become somewhat of an AFL recluse, while his bitter fallout with the club he represented for 189 games and four premierships has been laid bare.

Last year, however, he reminded everyone of his prodigious talents when he lit up Marvel Stadium in the EJ Whitten Legends Game.

“We are beyond excited to have him join our boys at our home game against Cobram!” Tongala said.

“Please join us for what is also our Men’s Day. The Tin Shed will be in full swing, with sweepstakes, barbecue and of course, everyone’s favourite Over 40s sprint race. Don’t miss this amazing day out at TFNC!”

The 2015 Norm Smith medallist now lives in Darwin and public appearances have been few and far between.

Last year at the Legends Game he wowed the record crowd of 31,000-plus and won the medal for best on ground.

“He’s been one of the highlights of the game,” star Channel 7 commentator Matthew Richardson said at the time.

“I think the crowd are just loving seeing Cyril back here at Marvel Stadium ... A bit of Hollywood entertainment there from Cyril, that’s what the crowd came to see.”
