Travis Kelce has caught caught two touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City advanced to their sixth straight AFC championship game with a 27-24 win over Buffalo.

The defending Super Bowl champions move on to face the conference's top-seeded Baltimore Ravens, who beat Houston 34-10 on Saturday.

Isiah Pacheco scored the go-ahead touchdown on a four-yard run 40 seconds into the fourth quarter on Monday (AEDT) in a game the teams traded leads five times. The Chiefs then clinched the win by running out the clock after the Bills' Tyler Bass was wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt with 1:43 remaining.

Kansas City have never lost in the divisional round since Mahomes took over as starter in 2018, and the Chiefs have now won five consecutive playoff games since a 27-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati in the AFC championship game during the 2021 season.

Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, can also check off another first on his record by winning his first road start in the playoffs -- not counting Super Bowls -- and improving his postseason mark to 13-3.

The Bills had their third consecutive postseason ended by Kansas City for the third time in four years.

Earlier, Detroit advanced to the NFC Championship game for the first time since 1991 with a 31-23 win over Tampa Bay.

Jared Goff finished 30 of 43 for 287 yards and two touchdowns and Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 74 yards and a score as the Lions, who have never played in a Super Bowl, set up a clash against the San Francisco 49ers next weekend.

"They're (our fans) the best. Look around right now. They're not going to leave here for quite some time," Goff said.

"They deserve to enjoy this and hope to give them a lot more moving forward."

The two teams traded field goals at Ford Field before Detroit got rolling behind rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, who had three straight catches of 13, two and 15 yards before Goff threw a nine-yard touchdown to Josh Reynolds.

Tampa Bay responded late in the half with Baker Mayfield throwing a touchdown pass to Cade Otton.

The Lions were back on top with 3:51 left in the third quarter when Craig Reynolds powered through, but the Buccaneers again found a response at the end of the quarter as an off-balance Mayfield found Rachaad White with a 12-yard touchdown.

The see-saw continued as Gibbs ran in from 31 yards to put Detroit back on top and they finally broke the pattern when Tampa Bay were forced to punt and Goff hit Amon-Ra St Brown with a perfect nine-yard touchdown pass.

The Bucs were not done yet as Mike Evans reeled in a 16-yard touchdown pass and they had the ball back inside the final two minutes, only for Mayfield to be picked off by Derrick Barnes to spark huge celebrations in Detroit.

"I envisioned that we would have a chance to compete with the big boys, and that's where we're at," Lions coach Dan Campbell said.
