NFL Four Downs: Week 2 delivers WILD results, reason for one team to panic & worst vibes ever for star QB

A flick of a millimetre of fabric almost determined the outcome of the Chiefs’ overtime victory over the Colts (0-2), reminding everyone how thin the margins are in the NFL.

Trailing 30-27 deep into overtime, Indi quarterback Daniel Jones heaved a long bomb downfield to wideout Laquon Treadwell, who caught the ball in the red zone before having it jarred loose and recovered by Kansas City (2-0).

It looked like game over, but replays showed Chiefs defender L’Jarius Sneed’s hand flicked Treadwell’s pants just as he corralled the bobbling catch, which meant the receiver was downed by contact before the fumble – Colts ball.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen will surely regret not going for it on the ensuing fourth down, instead settling for a game-tying field goal that gave the ball back to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

As we’ve seen so many times before, Mahomes promptly marched his team down the field – in related news, is there a better offseason acquisition than running back Kenneth Walker – and the Chiefs nailed a field goal for a 33-30 win.

WHAT THE HECK?

If Week 1 in the NFL was weird, Week 2 was a fever dream. The Saints (1-1) had a comeback win over the Ravens (1-1) in Baltimore, after last week falling to the Lions in overtime in Detroit.

Are New Orleans… good?

And what about the undefeated Raiders, who knocked off the Chargers in a 26-14 divisional win that saw bridge quarterback Kirk Cousins turn back the clock with three touchdowns.

First-time head coach Klint Kubiak will get superstar tight end Brock Bowers back from injury next week.

So, are the Raiders… good?

All we can say for sure after Week 2 is the Dolphins (0-2) stink.

SUCKS TO BE YOU

Thoughts and prayers for Tampa Bay (0-2) QB Baker Mayfield, who has always been a vibes player and is currently mired in the worst vibes ever.

If there was one game Mayfield had circled in the calendar, it was Week 2’s clash against the Browns (1-1), the team that famously drafted him No.1 overall and then gave him the boot in favour of Deshaun Watson.

Watson has been a disaster for the Browns – literally the worst contract in the history of the NFL – so imagine what it must’ve felt like for Mayfield to be outplayed by that chump in a 23-19 loss.

Early returns for the Buccaneers after signing Mayfield to a big extension a few weeks ago are not great.

PANIC INDEX

HIGH: If the winless Chargers aren’t panicking, they must be close. Where is the high-octane offence we were promised?

MEDIUM: In two games, the Lions (1-1) have scored 62 points, which is awesome. The problem? The defence has surrendered a league-worst 71. This must be fixed.

LOW: The Texans went into the season will many pundits predicting Houston would have the best defence in the NFL. Now, at 0-2, this unit is giving up 28 points a game. To be fair, they’ve faced Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Bengals passer Joe Burrow, who both played like the Top 5 QBs they are.
