West Coast has adopted an in with the old and out with the new philosophy as they try to break a horror losing streak with a win over Richmond in Saturday’s round eight clash at Optus Stadium.
Bo Allan, a first-round draft selection in 2024 and second-year defender Sandy Brock have paid the price for last week’s 101-point loss to St Kilda, while 22-year-old key forward Jack Williams has also been dropped.
They have been replaced by veteran premiership defender Tom Cole, experienced forward Matt Owies and off-season Adelaide recruit Harry Schoenberg.
Cole, one of only three members of the 2018 premiership team remaining in the squad alongside Liam Duggan and Jamies Cripps, returns for the first time since he was dropped after the club’s round one loss to Gold Coast.
Already struggling under the weight of a deep injury list, Richmond has been forced to make two forced changes and another omission, with former No.1 pick Sam Lalor sidelined by a partial Achilles tear at training on Thursday.
Midfielder Hugo Ralphsmith is also out injured, while ruckman Samson Ryan has been dropped.
Two-time premiership defender Jayden Short returns after he was a late withdrawal from the Tigers’ Anzac Eve clash to support his wife in welcoming their first child.
Midfielder Tyler Sonsie and ruckman Oliver Hayes-Brown, a former development payer with the Perth Wildcats, are the other two ins.
West Coast will be looking to halt a dreadful four-week losing streak, while the Tigers will be gunning for their first victory of the season.
The Eagles have lost their past four games by a combined 331 points, a 128-point loss to Sydney, followed by 46-point defeat by Geelong, a 56-point loss to Fremantle and last weekend’s 101-point belting by the Saints.
Despite that, Andrew McQualter’s side will start a $1.40 favourite with TABTouch with Richmond at $2.95.
The Tigers have beaten West Coast in six of their past seven meetings.
West Coast co-captain Liam Baker, a dual premiership player with the Tigers, is yet to taste victory against his old team, while defender Tylar Young will play against his former side for the first time.
Both teams are battling injuries. The Eagles are without defenders Harry Edwards, who will return from concussion protocols in the WAFL, Brandon Starcevich (calf), Jack Graham (shoulder), Archer Reid (knee) and Deven Robertson (knee).
The Tigers have their issues too, entering the game without captain Toby Nankervis (hamstring) and Maurice Rioli (hamstring) among 15 players on the club’s injury list.
The Tigers were hoping to recall gun midfielder Tim Taranto but he has been ruled out of for another week as he works his way through concussion protocols.
