Perth’s own Alessandro Circati says the opportunity to represent the Socceroos at next month’s FIFA World Cup would make his “younger self very proud and very content” but admits there is still work to do if he is to realise his dream.
Circati joined the Socceroos training camp ahead of the side’s final warm-up match against Mexico on Sunday, before the final 26-man squad for the World Cup is picked just days later.
The 22-year-old said an opportunity to represent his nation at soccer’s ultimate showpiece would fulfil a dream that not even his younger self thought possible.
“I mean, it’s what I’ve been working for, to make me feel like I’ve achieved something that I’m working for a dream of mine, something which my younger self probably wasn’t even thinking of,” Circati said.
“To be able to be in this position to be able to possibly go to one, I think it really makes my younger self very proud and very content.
“I’m not content with where I am, but I think it’s a nice objective to be able to accomplish.”
Although their opening match against Turkiye is just under two weeks away, Circati said there was still work to be done before the squad is finalised.
“It is around the corner. If you start looking at dates and numbers, it is very close,” he said.
“But we’ve got these two games now, and obviously the squad hasn’t been selected, so I think the boys are all doing their best to try and get in the squad.”
The Mexico bout is expected to draw a mammoth crowd, with already well over 70,000 tickets sold for the warm-up fixture. The centre-back said an opportunity to play in front of a large crowd was always exciting.
“It’s great to hear there are a lot of people, it’s always good fun.
“I think we played against Mexico maybe three years back, in Texas, and I think there was like 95-100,000 people there. So that’s sick, the more people the better.”
The Socceroos will take on Mexico on Sunday at 10am AWST, before the final squad is made official on June 2 AWST.
