Refreshed Melbourne flower show set for big year

There were record crowds at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show last year — and organisers are hoping for another big turnout at the world-heritage-listed Carlton Gardens and Royal Exhibition Building from Wednesday, March 20 to Sunday, March 24.

And the five-day extravaganza has new and interesting horticultural experiences. There will be new food and entertainment zones, family-friendly workshops, and floral exhibitions and talks by experts.

The reinvigorated program includes internationally-acclaimed landscape designers competing in the Show Garden competition. From Sweden, there are newcomers Annika Zetterman and Kajsa Bjorne. Ireland’s Peter Donegan and Japan’s Koji Ninomiya return for a shot at gold. The first Indigenous Show Garden, in collaboration with the Wurundjeri Council, will reflect the connection between the land and custodians.

And in another first for the show, and in partnership with the City of Melbourne, visitors will have the chance to experience Urban Forest in the Royal Exhibition Building forecourt.

Other new program highlights include aerial floral displays, edible cultural gardens, and a guide to “table-scaping”.

“Our refreshed program boasts a host of world-class talent and awe-inspiring exhibitions inspired by the latest horticultural trends, providing an elevated visitor experience. Whether your green thumbs are budding or in full bloom, the show has something for everyone. It’s the must-attend event of the season!”

It is at the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, Melbourne, Victoria, and open from 9am to 5pm most days, except March 22, when it is open until 9pm.
