Colour has splashed across Katanning’s Piesse Park wetlands, with a vibrant new mural transforming a once boring cement cylinder into an eye-catching outdoor artwork for the community to enjoy.
Local artist Larissa Chen completed the artwork on April 12, giving the wetland a much-needed burst of fun and colour.
The mural was painted on a concrete tower that was once used to pump excess salt water from underneath the lake to separate the salt groundwater from the surface rain water.
Deputy chair of the Friends of Piesse Park group Bev Lockley said the community was happy with the mural and it has enhanced the area.

“It looks nicer for people and Larissa is a terrific artist,” she said.
“Basically, it’s got abstract plants with Banksia trees.
“I think everybody’s quite happy with it — people come and look and move on.
“It’s really great to have somebody like Larissa who can embellish things because not everybody’s got that skill.”
Ms Lockley said another cement tower will be painted on the other side of the lake.
This project will likely prove more challenging for the artist.
“The lake was dry so we were able to build a platform for Larissa to stand on (for this mural) but the other one we want to do is going to need a floating platform so that’s got a bit more logistical problems.”

Chen said she hoped her artwork would attract people to the area and allow them to appreciate nature.
“They gave me freedom to paint anything I wanted so I wanted something that would attract people here,” she said.
“It’s bright and alive so hopefully people feel like they’re part of nature and they feel the moment when they are here.”
Chen said she was excited to paint the next tower with native WA animals.
