An IGA store has taken the pineapple on pizza debate to a whole new level - by infusing the tropical fruit into chicken sausages to celebrate a special Queensland Day release.

Bellmore Butcher Jackson Miano and IGA Alexandra Hills owner Dan Rigney teamed up for the fruity limited-edition snagger to raise money for a local school.

The pair combined Queensland pineapples, chicken mince and cheese in what they say could be the state’s most controversial barbecue creation yet.

Mr Miano will whip up 100kg of the controversial sausage with his team on Saturday morning that will be ready to sizzle at the Alexandra Hills store from 7am.

“Look, some people are going to absolutely love it and some people are probably going to think I should lose my butcher licence,” he said.

“A lot of people have been a little bit sceptical, but when they try it, they realise it works.

“It goes really well with a nice tomato sauce, caramelised onions and a nice fresh bit of bread, you can’t go wrong.

“But Queensland is famous for great pineapples and great BBQs, so we thought - why not bring the two together? At the very least, it’s guaranteed to get people arguing around the barbie.”

Mr Rigney said they wanted to do something different that was unique to Queensland to help raise money for Hilliard State School.

He said Australians loved a good barbecue debate so they thought they would stir the pot with a pineapple snag.

“We trialled it the other day, Jackson the butcher that created it came into the store, and we cooked up a few and handed out bits and pieces,” he said.

“The overall reaction was pretty good.”

“At the end of the day though, Queensland Day is about community, local pride and bringing people together - and there’s no better place for that than standing around a BBQ with family and mates.”
