Great battle

Ackerman wants to take Lyon down but the wily veteran knows what he’s about and very nearly takes the wicket as the second-gamer charges.

He looped it right up and Ackerman just got enough bat to it to stop a stumping.

Lyon starts

Lyon is going to get some bulk overs today.

He restarts against Ackerman and the offie drops a really hard caught and bowled attempt.

The Proteas opener smashed it back and the bowler had barely a chance to see it as it crashed into his right hand.

Restart

The batters are back in the middle and this is a big session for Australia.

They just need to grab some early momentum.

Lunch

That was one of Australia’s worst sessions of bowling this decade.

It’s compounded by Cummins making the wrong call at the toss but no one has looked dangerous and Ackerman, in his second Test innings, has made them all look second rate.

The pitch is flat and slow but the big three can normally create pressure with tight lines and impeckable lengths.

But they’ve been all over the place and the Proteas have breached every boundary as they have flown along at nearly five runs an over.

In fact, the first outside edge of the session came from the final ball and fittingly avoided the slips and went for four.

The Aussies will need to turn this around quickly after the break or they will find themsleves looking at playing for a draw again by the end of the day.

50

Markram reaches his half century and while he has been overshadowed by Ackerman, it’s been another classy innings.

He reaches it with back-to-back boundaries through the off side against Lyon.

Cop this!

Starc’s been belted through point, beautifully flicked over mid-wicket and flashily guided past slips for three boudaries in three balls.

Ackerman then moves into the 80s with a cut into the turf that bounces over gully and to the rope.

Dropped!!!!!!

Horrific!

Markram has hit a soda straight to Head at cover and the Aussie shelled it.

The ball hit the splice and came too slow at Head who despite getting both hands to it drops the catch.

The Aussies are quickly splipping out of the series.

41 innings

South Africa have their first 100-run opening stand in 41 innings.

The last one was Markram and the now retired Dean Elgar against West Indies.

Comes in a putrid over from Cummins.

SA 0-102

Safe!

Markram gets a top edge on the pull but it lands safe in the outfield.

Lyon didn’t quite pick it up but it wasn’t really a chance.

Ackerman takes the next ball, which was also short, over fine leg for six.

SA 0-98

Maiden milestone

Ackermann has his maiden half century in just his second innings.

He’s batted well and is starting to open up as well.

He’s been very positive against Lyon.
